Week 13: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? - In Class Assessment

1. What is your reaction to the text you just read?
“Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow” was the first Superman comic I have ever read. Up to this point I had only seen movies, so reading this I did have a bit of background information about the character. I really enjoyed this reading as it didn’t have the normal story line of a superhero saving the day and living happily ever after; this happy ever after ended with a twist. This story ended with many close friends of the hero being killed and hurt by the enemies, as well as Superman “leaving” after breaking his own code. While everyone thought that he had died after entering the Gold Kryptonite chamber and losing his powers, it is later revealed that he is Lois’ husband, now living a normal life without superpowers, as well as taking care of his son, who is shown to have inherited Superman’s strength. So while it may have seemed to have a tragic ending, Superman lives his own new happily ever after. It was an ending I didn’t expect, so I really enjoyed reading this story and getting to see the unexpected outcome.

2. What connections did you make with the story? Discuss the elements of the story with which you were able to connect?
After finishing the story, it took me a moment, however, I was able to connect that Lois' husband was Superman. They couldn't find Superman's body because he had come back, only this time without any powers. I really liked that Alan Moore ended the story with a twist, as it was really unexpected and turned the tragic ending into a much happier, pleasant surprise.

3. What changes would you make to adapt the story into another medium? What medium would you use? What changes would you make?
If I were to adapt the story into another medium, I would make the story into a film. I think all of the action and plot twists would have a much greater affect if they were played out in full scenes, and would be able to give the viewer much more information and content.
