Week 9: A Wide World of Comics - Asterix the Gaul

Asterix the Gaul by René Goscinny has to be my favorite graphic novel I read during this semester. The fun and comedic storyline really captured my attention and easily became one of the first graphic novels that just kept me wanting to read more. This graphic novel contains a lot of historical and political satire and I would recommend this to almost anyone. In this novel, the Romans have conquered all of the Gauls except one village. This book is based on the adventure of Asterix as he sets out to rescue Getafix, the village druid, in order to keep the Romans from finding out about their secret weapon, their magic potion that gives them super-strength, to keep them from over-running their village. Asterix makes his way Compendium and comes up with plots and schemes that he uses to rescue Getafix. The entire story is filled with humor and fun adventures that I really enjoyed reading. I didn’t expect to enjoy this graphic novel as much as I did, as I began reading it with absolutely no background information about the story, but I am really happy to have been introduced to this series.
